(to Brighton beach and back)

An original Mod and scooter lad in the 60’s (on Brighton beach 1964) and still a real ‘Blue-eyed soul boy’!

Discovered Soul Music, initially through Motown, Stax and Atlantic records and by experiencing live acts such as Otis Redding, and the Motown and Stax reviews, etc. then become a Northern Soul convert after visits to venues to Wigan Casino, the Torch, Twisted Wheel, Blackpool and many other clubs around the UK.

Retired to Brighton in 2017 and revitalised my love of Soul music, courtesy of Paddy Shevlin’s ‘Too Darn Soulful’ events

Linked up with Matt Hawkins and Colin Slater in 2021 to start “Across The Tracks” Northern & Motown events at the Railway Club adding even more regular local soul nights to enjoy in the Brighton and south coast area

Matt Hawkins

A Mod Revivalist in the early 80s, driven  by Quadrophenia, the Jam, and a certain Mod-ette at the local nightclub!

I always loved the Motown sound and the scooter scene introduced me to Northern Soul, to which I never stopped listening. My fellow scooter enthusiasts (in the West Country) drifted away from the scene and I rekindled my love for going to soul events and nighters when living in London (late 80s), regularly visiting the 100 Club, Bisley, Cross Fire and Teddington (amongst others).

Like Tony, I moved to Hove , but in 2016, and the scene down on the South Coast has been brilliant, - long may it continue. We need some generation Z (and millenials) to keep the scene alive, so hopefully, this event and the associated web-site will help with that.

Colin Slater

Born and raised in Wolverhampton, West Midlands. Became hooked on classic 60's soul and Motown via youth clubs and other local venues. Member of Catacombs soul club since its inception in 1968 which played rare soul music, a little Motown and some "popcorn" tracks. This club was ahead of its time being in existence before the phrase "Northern Soul" was coined in 1973 by Dave Godin !

I acquired some original vinyl back in the day, also travelling to London (Contempo Records) to pick up a few US imports. I moved to Brighton and although in the early 70's there little in the way of soul music on offer there, I found the opportunity to DJ at one or two local spots. In the late 80's I was resident DJ at Retreat Club (now sadly gone) in Brighton where I also played 12" dance records, and some soul, Northern Soul and Motown.
